The Truth

billcohen33

What is truth? That is the question Pilate asked Jesus, John 18:37-38, "Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all." Too bad Pilate didn't wait for an answer. Jesus had already given the answer in John 14:6, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Jesus is the truth and the only way to salvation.

Why is Jesus the only way? John 10:8-10, "All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep."

Had Pilate waited for the answer, would he have been too arrogant to understand it? Could he have believed that a king would come and sacrifice himself so that he could save his people? That wasn't the Roman way. But it is the way of the Kingdom of God. For Jesus taught, Matthew 20:25-28, "But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." This is why Jesus came, to bring us the truth of this life and God's plan for eternity.

Jesus brought the belt of truth, Ephesians 6:14a, "Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth," which is having your faith grounded in Jesus. When we know Jesus, not just know about Him, we are set free, John 8:31-32, "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Free from what?

Free from the lies the devil keeps telling us, like we are not good enough, God is not the way to salvation, or God could not love a person like us, John 8:44, "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."

The truth frees us from the lusts of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life; 1 John 2:16, "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." but Jesus came to save us from this world's temptations, John 8:36, "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."

The truth sets us free because we can no longer be fooled by the devil and his tricks.

This world is full of people telling us they know the truth. The problem is that the truth they know is temporary. The truth they tell us about today is not the same truth they told us about five years ago. Their version of the truth benefits us if you get on board at the beginning and get out before it is proven false. It is the ultimate Ponzi scheme. The truth Jesus brought us two thousand years ago is the same today, Malachi 3:6, "For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." and Hebrews 13:8, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." God and His truth never change. It is the only truth you can build a life upon. What good is a truth that changes?
